Unmasking Your Inner Saboteur

Do you have an unfulfilled desire that seems out of reach?

Even if the reasons it seems so appear completely logical, and perhaps even set in stone, if this desire really matters to you, it’s worth checking whether your inner saboteur is at work behind the scenes.

Yup, for oh-so-many reasons, we all have that inner saboteur! And it can disguise itself with a whole host of rational-looking masks, leading you to believe you can’t have what you want.

To keep that inner saboteur in check, you need to recognize it for what it is. And for your unfulfilled desire to have a chance at coming to fruition, you’ll likely need to explore your situation from new angles and discover whether your inner saboteur has a hidden hand in it.

To begin, fill in the blanks of the following sentence:

My big dream is to ________________ but ___________________________________________________________________________.

List as many reasons as come to mind. This can be key information!

Now let’s see if these reasons match up with some common masks the inner saboteur may wear, and consider some ideas on what may actually lurk beneath.

We’ll begin with the biggest category of four common types of masks your inner saboteur may wear, the Lack-of-Resources Autopilot.

Do you automatically tell yourself or others one or more of the following?

· I don’t have time.

Might this indicate you’re unwilling to make the time, or work toward making the time?

· I don’t have money.

Might this show you that you don’t value this desire enough to reallocate money, or work toward having (making and/or receiving) the money?

· I don’t have moral support - People (my partner, family, friends, society in general) wouldn’t like it/accept it.

Might some part of you have guilt, shame, or a negative outlook about this desire?

I invite you to chew on this food for thought, and read next week’s post - Three More Common Types of Masks Your Inner Saboteur May Wear & Ideas On What May Lurk Beneath Them.
